Are We Heading Toward Extinction? (July 2019)

The Earth’s species — plants, animals and humans, alike — are facing imminent demise. How we got here, and how to cope (Catherine Ingram).

“For much of my life, I thought our species would soon go extinct. I assumed we might last another hundred years if we were lucky. Now I suspect we are facing extinction in the near future. Can I speculate as to exactly when that might happen? Of course not. My sense of this is based only on probability. It might be similar to hearing about a diagnosis of late-stage pancreatic cancer. Is it definite that the person is going to die soon? No, not definite. Is it highly probable? Yes, one would be wise to face the likelihood and put one’s affairs in order. (Catherine Ingram)”

Climate scientist speaks about letting down humanity and what to do about it (July 2019)

Conversations between Dr. Wolfgang Knorr (University of Lund) and Professor Jen Bendell

“I must admit that I am mostly worried for my children and their own children and grand-children if they one day choose to become parents themselves. This is absolutely my personal view, and might be to some degree the result of professional denial. My gut feeling says that it will take another 20-30 years until we see really massive impacts, but that these impacts will look very different from what we expect (Dr. Knorr)”.

Dr. Antoni Guasch (August 2019)

I have always thought that an economic model based on permanent growth is not viable. However, these have been second thoughts without real awareness of the current situation. Three years ago, in the summer of 2016, my friend Ásta from Iceland recommended me the book “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed” by Jered Diamond. This book shows the delicate balance that allows societies to survive. Two years later we found in Scotland the book “A Farewell to Ice: A Report from the Artic” by Peter Wadhams in a second-hand bookshop. This book describes the spiral of the death of the Arctic ice and its predictable impact on the environment and humanity. It is in this summer of 2018 when I realize that my children will surely suffer the consequences of the climate crisis. In recent years I have tried, together with my wife, to make our very modest contribution, changing the lifestyle and consumption habits, to mitigate this problem. This effort is probably useless, but it is necessary to feel that we are doing something instead of completely ignoring the problem.

This blog includes a list of documents, reports, conversations and web pages that I’ve found valuable for my personal understanding of the potential social and economical impact of the climate crisis.
